The Lectorate, a none-credit activity required for access to the second-year English course and subsequent English exam.  During the admissions test, at the end of the TOLC-PSI, there is an additional section dedicated to testing students' knowledge of the English language.  The test consists of 30 questions and evaluation is determined by obtaining 1 point for each correct answer and 0 points for each wrong answer/unanswered question.  Attendance for the Lectorate is thus structured as follows:
0-23 points: Required attendance and passing grade to be admitted to second-year English course and exam.
24-30 points: Students are not required to attend the Lectorate class or pass any subsequent tests of the course and are directly admitted to the second-year English course and subsequent English exam (they must, however, register for the final exam in May even though they will not sit the exam. Students in possession of a valid First Certificate (B2) or Advanced Certificate (C1) or equivalent recognized certificate are exempt from the requirement of attending the lettorato and subsequent tests regardless of their results in the English portion of the TOLC-SU and are directly admitted to the English course and the English exam in their second year, under the condition that they submit a copy of the certificate in PDF form via e-mail to Professor Ouroussoff (English language coordinator).   This is how required attendance to the LETTORATO will be decided for first-year students as of the academic year 2022-23.

  At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to apply and recognize the concepts, grammar and vocabulary (specific topics) covered in class in a written context.

 The following topics will be covered in class: Grammar: form and use of verbal tenses (present simple, present continuous, past simple, past continuous, present perfect simple, present perfect continuous; perfect tenses, modal verbs); prepositions  and phrasal verbs (use and concepts);

Pronunciation: for communication and listening skills;

Capacità di comunicazione: preparazione di un testo di presentazione (scritto ed orale);

Analyzing texts: analizing written texts from three perspectives: grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.

All lessons will be taught in class; 4 hours a week (divided into 2 2-hour lessons a week); the Lectorate is an annual course with lessons during both first and second semester.  Attendance is required and only in presence.

Students are divided into 3 channels (A, B, C) on a last-name basis, like the other lessons.

There will be two written tests during classtime (date to be established) testing the student's ability to correctly apply the grammar covered in class (topics of tests: modal verbs; prepositions) and two final tests on verbal tenses covered in class testing the student's ability to apply them correctly within a written text.  Each student will also be asked to prepare a written and oral presentation of themselves to be presented in class.

The final evaluation (pass/fail) will be based on the combination of the four written tests and oral and written presentation in equal parts.

All tests will be carried out in presence only.

Should students have any questions or doubts regarding material covered in cass, the professor will be available for consultation upon request. 

The professor will provide the students with written material to integrate with the text used in class (English Grammar in Use, intermediate, Raymond Murphy)
